Back To Love Again
Yesterday's win by Serena Williams in the 2019 Rogers Cup quarter-final against Naomi Osaka marks her first event since losing the Wimbledon final. It was also the first time she has faced top ranked Osaka of Japan since losing to her last year in the US Open final. To recall, while the argument per se did not cost Serena that championship, it was refreshing yesterday to see the focus being maintained on the skill between the greats of tennis. Tempers were kept cool; an awareness perhaps influenced by the publicity being tossed in waves of last year’s uproar, it’s safe to say, the court’s returned to Love. Serena went on to win the semi-final against Marie Bouzkova, and then, a surprising twist today, when Serena pulled out of the match due to injury. After only 19 minutes in, the title went to Bianca Andreescu of Canada. For Toronto and for Canadians at large, it's good to know the fever of the Raptors win stays with us. My thanks to friend Mary Joan who was there live and shared the energy and excitement via posts.
